Agnew Scholarship Awarded

A Washington County nursing student has been chosen to receive the Alice Agnew Scholarship to attend Beaufort County Community College this fall.

Sharon Thomas, of Plymouth, was chosen for the award. Thomas is a student in BCCC’s Practical Nursing Program. She is a graduate of Plymouth High School and holds degrees in Early Childhood Associate and Early Childhood/Teachers Associate.

Thomas is employed at Plumbee Nursing Center in Plymouth. She hopes to work in an area hospital or nursing home after graduating from BCCC. Thomas has two children.

“Thank you for the support and belief that I will make a contribution to the nursing field,” she said.

The Alice Agnew Scholarship is awarded from an endowment established in 2006 by Agnew’s children - Tom, Jo, Beth, Chris, Virgil, and Mary. Agnew and her family were so impressed with the quality of care she had received in the Beaufort County Nursing Home that they decided to use the endowment’s earnings to provide a scholarship with preference given to a nursing assistant who wants to further his or her career in a medical field.
