McLawhorn President’s Fund Scholarship

Jackson Lancaster, president of the Beaufort County Community College Student Government Association, has received a scholarship to attend BCCC awarded from an endowment established by a former president of the college.

Lancaster, 19, of Washington, is a student in BCCC’s Business Administration Program. A 2014 graduate of the Beaufort County Early College High School, Lancaster holds an associate in arts degree from BCCC. He is a licensed realtor with Coldwell Banker Coastal Rivers Realty. At BCCC, Lancaster is a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society and a college Ambassador. He also serves as an ex-officio member of the BCCC Board of Trustees. After graduating from BCCC he plans to continue his education while building a successful career in real estate. Lancaster is the son of Terry and Louann Lancaster of Washington.

“I am truly grateful to Dr. McLawhorn for making this scholarship possible for me,” he said. “It is much appreciated and will be used wisely to help me in continuing my education.”

The McLawhorn President’s Fund Scholarship was established in 2005 from a donation given to the BCCC Foundation by then-college President David McLawhorn in honor of the college’s 40^th anniversary and as an encouragement to other BCCC faculty and staff, as well as former college presidents, to donate to the Foundation.

Washington Women’s Club Scholarship

Shannon Pake, a student in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Beaufort County Community College, has been awarded the Washington Women’s Club Scholarship to attend BCCC this fall.

Pake, 35, of Washington is a student in BCCC’s Associate Degree Nursing Program. A graduate of Washington High School, she plans to work as a registered nurse while pursuing a bachelor’s degree after graduating from BCCC. She and her husband, Spencer, have three children.

“I want to thank the Washington Women’s Club for their generosity in providing students with the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” she said. “For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a nurse.”

The scholarship is awarded through the Washington Woman’s Club Endowment, established in 1999. The fund provides an annual scholarship to a second year nursing student living in Beaufort County. Recipients must have a 3.5 grade point average or better and be willing to work in Beaufort County for one year after they graduate from the nursing program.

Two receive David C. Lee Scholarship

Two Business Division students – Lydia O’Neal and Claude Piles. – have been awarded the David C. Lee Scholarship awarded by the Beaufort County Community College to attend BCCC this fall.

O’Neal, 55, of Belhaven, a student in BCCC’s Medical Office Administration Program, has been chosen for the award. O’Neal is a graduate of John A. Wilkinson High School in Belhaven. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Satchell of Belhaven and is married to Henry L. O’Neal. After graduating from BCCC, O’Neal plans to get a job in the medical field.

“This scholarship will help me focus more on my studies as I will not have to think of the finances required for my degree,” she said. “I hope that the love these donors have shown me will help me in the future to help others in achieving their goals.”

Piles, 49, is a student in BCCC’s Automotive Technology Program. A graduate of Washington High School, Piles is a veteran of the U.S. Army. He plans to work in an automotive dealership after completing his studies at BCCC. Piles and his wife, Karen, a 2014 graduate of BCCC’s Associate

“I am humbled and honored to be a recipient of the David Clifton Lee, Jr., Scholarship,” he said. “I think the donors for helping me have a second chance.”

The scholarship was established by David Clifton Lee Jr.’s wife, Betty, of Washington, and children―Steve and David H. Lee of Washington, Debra Lee Perry of the Woodard’s Pond community, Larry Lee of the Pungo Creek community and Amanda Lee Sawyer of Belhaven.

A native of Beaufort County, Mr. Lee was born in 1927 and died in 2003. He was a graduate of Pantego High School and attended Mars Hill College. In 1970, Lee founded Lee Chevrolet, Inc. in Washington, now Lee Chevrolet-Pontiac-Buick, Inc., which continues to be owned and operated by his family. Mr. Lee was active in the automobile business in Beaufort County for over 50 years and in civic affairs throughout his life, including service on the Beaufort County Board of Education for a number of years.

Woodmen of the World contributes to sign campaign in memory of former member

Woodmen of the World Lodge 623 recently contributed to Beaufort County Community College’s digital sign campaign in memory of former lodge member, Jack Clayton. A native of Hyde County, Clayton served in the U.S. Army, Air Force and National Guard and worked as a journeyman meat cutter for several area grocery stores. Clayton served as President of the Woodman of the World Lodge 623 and was active in the organization’s activities before his death earlier this year. He was also active in other community organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Bunyan Ruritan Club and was a scout master. J. Bonner Paul Scholarship

A Belhaven student was awarded a scholarship to attend Beaufort County Community College funded by an endowment established in memory of J. Bonner Paul Sr., former president and co-owner of Paul Funeral Home.

J. Bonner Paul

The J. Bonner Paul, Sr., Endowment was established in November 2008 by Mr. Paul’s wife, Lillian, and current Paul Funeral Home Vice President Robert B. “Bobby” Hodges to provide scholarships for students enrolled in a business or nursing program at BCCC.

Mr. Paul was active in business and civic affairs. He was a life-long member of the First Christian Church in Washington. He was the longest-term member of the Bunyan Ruritan Club, a member of the Orr Lodge # 104 A.F. & A.M., the Beaufort Country Grange, Tau Tribe 19, I.O.R.M. and was one of the charter members of the Washington Jaycees. He also served several terms as Beaufort County Coroner before the county came under the Medical Examiner System.

Mr. Paul served five years on the N.C. State Board of Mortuary Science including a one-year term as president of the board. He also served ten years on the N.C. Burial Association Commission. On June 19, 2003, he was awarded the North Carolina Funeral Director Association Honorary Membership given in recognition and appreciation for his support and contributions to the advancement of the association and practice of funeral service. On October 16, 2007, Mr. Paul was presented a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the members of District 2 for grateful appreciation for his professional service and dedication to the advance of funeral service.

James E. and Evelyn Smith III Scholarship awarded

Karen Taft of Walstonburg has received a scholarship awarded from an endowment established by a former Beaufort County Community College staff member in honor of her parents.

Taft, 28, is a student in BCCC’s Human Services Technology Program. A graduate of Junius H. Rose High School in Greenville, Taft plans to work at a social services agency in the state after graduating from BCCC. The daughter of Melvin Edwards of Farmville and Crystal Simms of Greenville, Taft has two children.

“The financial assistance this scholarship provided will be a great help to me in paying my educational expenses and it will allow me to concentrate more of my time for studying,” she said. “I promise I will work very hard and eventually give something back to others.”

The endowment was established by Mandy Jones, a counselor at BCCC since 1990, in honor of her parents to commemorate their life-long love of learning. The endowment will fund a scholarship, to be awarded annually to a curriculum student with preference given to a student who is a Human Services Technology student. 

James and Evelyn Smith

The Smiths have had a long-standing association with BCCC both as teachers and students. James Smith taught economics in the early years of BCCC, when classes were held over the old fire department on Market Street. He also taught the personal income tax course through continuing education for several years on the college’s current campus on U.S. 264 East of Washington. Evelyn Smith took classes at BCCC to help with the family business.

Parker receives Margaret Hodges Hackney and Irwin and Frances Hulbert Scholarships

Demeka Parker, a student in the Practical Nursing Program at Beaufort County Community College, has been chosen by the BCCC Foundation to receive the Margaret Hodges Hackney and Irwin and France Hulbert Scholarships to attend BCCC this fall.

Parker, 24, of Greenville, is a graduate of J.H. Rose High School and holds a Certified Nurse Aide I certificate. She is employed as a nurse aide at Golden Living Center. Parker is the daughter of Alton and Tracey Vines. She and her husband, Wiley, have two children. After graduating from BCCC, Parker plans to continue her studies to become a nurse practitioner.

“This scholarship has been a blessing to me,” she said. “I am truly honored to be a recipient of this award.”

The Margaret Hodges Hackney Scholarship is funded by an endowment. Established in 2005 in memory of Mrs. Hackney, the endowment made permanent the long-time, annually-funded scholarship Mrs. Hackney gave in memory of her father, Ralph H. Hodges.

Since 1988, the scholarship has been given to a BCCC nursing student who demonstrates financial need and academic merit.

Mrs. Hackney’s interest in nursing grew from her 24-year association with the Beaufort County Community Advisory Committee. Mrs. Hackney was appointed to the group – whose members serve as ombudsmen for people in nursing homes – when it was formed in 1977 by then- Gov. James B. Hunt Jr.

Irwin Hulbert

The group was instrumental in working with BCCC to establish the Licensed Practical Nursing, or LPN, and Nurse Aide programs. Today, over 40 percent of the region’s nursing personnel are graduates of BCCC.

The Irwin and Frances Hulbert Scholarship is funded by an endowment established by the Hulberts’ sons, Ned Hulbert of Harrisville, N.H.; Robin Hulbert of Peterborough, N.H., and David Hulbert of Wilmington and their families and friends.

The Hulberts served Episcopal parishes and their larger communities in Jesup, Ga.; Hopkinsville, Ky., and Georgetown, S.C. before coming to Washington in 1965. They served St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington and Trinity Episcopal Church in Chocowinity for over 40 years.

Mrs. Hulbert served on the board of the Beaufort County Community College Foundation and sponsored scholarships for technical, vocational and nursing students through the foundation.
