Join the Beaufort County Community College Foundation, Saturday, Nov. 17, for a trip to Durham to see the award-winning stage production of Jersey Boys and enjoy a tour of one of the state’s most renowned garden spots.

The trip will also include meals at two popular restaurants in the Triangle region.

The cost of the trip, open to all BCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college, is $185 per person. The trip is limited to 30 participants so early registration is recommended.

The price of the trip includes transportation to and from Durham, two meals and tickets for seats in the orchestra section for Jersey Boys at the Durham Performing Arts Center in downtown Durham.

The trip will leave the parking lot at BCCC by 7:45 a.m. and arrive at the J.C. Raulston Arboretum at 10 a.m. Once there, the group will tour the nationally acclaimed garden, with one of the largest and most diverse collections of landscape plants adapted for use in the Southeast.

Following this tour, participants will travel to The Pizzeria in Durham’s West Village for a lunch similar to the ones enjoyed by Frankie Valli and his fellow musicians when they were growing up in the Garden State.

After lunch, the group will travel to DPAC in Durham for a matinee performance of Jersey Boys, the Tony Award-winning Best Musical about Rock and Roll Hall of Famers The Four Seasons. This is the story of how four blue-collar kids from New Jersey became one of the greatest successes in pop music history. The musical features hit songs such as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

After the performance, participants will travel to Raleigh, for dinner at Bella Monica restaurant – a popular neighborhood trattoria. The tour is scheduled to return to Beaufort County around 9:30 p.m.

BCCC Foundation Golf Tournament winners announced

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation’s 19th Annual Golf Tournament drew a field of some 90 players to the Washington Yacht and Country Club on Friday, Sept. 28. And 32 of those players were crowned winners in four flights.

The golf tournament, sponsored by PotashCorp - Aurora, is the largest single fund-raising event for the Foundation and provides money for scholarships and emergency awards to students attending BCCC.

Each year, the tournament raises some $10,000 for the Foundation, according to Director Judy Jennette.

“The BCCC Foundation is very appreciative of the players who participated in the tournament this year as well PotashCorp - Aurora and the tournament co-sponsors for helping raise money for scholarships for deserving students,” she said.

This year, as in past years, the tournament was a four-person, super ball with teams pre-flighted based on each golfer’s handicap.

The 2012 Tournament winners are as follows:

·         Championship Flight: First Place - Curtis Brown, Andy Franklin, Ryan Mooring and Eric Slade; Second Place - Mark Carawan, Joe Carawan, Ben Cole and Paul Spruill;

·         First Flight: First Place - Alan Boyuszak, Mike Calfee, Ben Coleman and Ray Wilson; Second Place - Sid Ashby, Charles Holley, David Lee and Shelton McNair.

·         Second Flight: First Place - Randy Apple, Bobby Morse, Rod Rathbun and Jack Swanner; Second Place - Alton Griffin, Neil James, Robbie Moore and Kain Ross;

·         Third Flight: First Place - Jim Denton, Tony Faulkner, Joe Paul and Matt Woodleif; Second Place - Reggie Beamon, John Easterling, Mark Jungers and Henry Stancill.

BCCC Foundation Golf Tournament set for Sept. 28

See the stage production of War Horse with the BCCC Foundation!

Join the Beaufort County Community College Foundation, Saturday, Oct. 6, for a trip to Durham to see the award-winning stage production of War Horse and enjoy a meal at one of the state’s outstanding French restaurants.

The trip will also include a tour of the James B. Hunt Jr. Horse Complex in Raleigh and dinner at Fearington Village south of Chapel Hill.

The cost of the trip, open to all BCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college, is $185 per person. The registration deadline is Monday, Oct. 1.

The price of the trip includes transportation to and from Durham, two meals and tickets for seats in the orchestra section for War Horse at the Durham Performing Arts Center in downtown Durham.

The trip will leave the parking lot at BCCC by 8 a.m. and arrive at the James B. Hunt Jr. Horse Complex by 10:30 a.m. Once there, the group will tour the complex, the busiest equine facility in North Carolina and Virginia. The horse complex hosts events featuring many horse disciplines including Quarter Horses, Hunters, Jumpers, Dressage, Morgans and others.

Following this tour, participants will travel to Saint Jacques French Cuisine in northern Raleigh for lunch at noon. Saint Jacques is the only true French restaurant in Raleigh. It is owned by Lil Lacassagne, who started his career under Roger Verge at the Moulin de Mougins, and his wife, Lori.

After lunch, the group will travel to DPAC in Durham for a matinee performance of War Horse, the story of a beloved horse and its owner in World War I. As the war begins, young Albert’s horse, Joey, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France where he is soon caught up in enemy fire. At the heart of this dramatic stage production are life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company that brings to life charging horses strong enough for men to ride.

After the performance, participants will travel to Fearrington Village, about 11 miles south of Chapel Hill to explore the shops at the village and have dinner at the informal Granary at 5:30 p.m. The tour is scheduled to return to Beaufort County around 9:30 p.m.

Grand Opening set for new Katie Paul Allied Health and Nursing Building

The Grand Opening for the new Katie Paul Allied Health and Nursing Building at Beaufort County Community College is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 13. The 30,600 square-foot building will bring all the college's health sciences programs together under one roof. 

Event will also welcome new BCCC President

The Grand Opening of the new Katie Paul Allied Health and Nursing Building at Beaufort County Community College has been set for Monday, Aug. 13, with a schedule of events that will bring Allied Health alumni back to the college campus to witness the changes in health care.

The event will be the college's first public event presided over by President Barbara Tansey and will give those attending the chance to meet new BCCC's new leader.

The new building will bring advanced training to Allied Health students at the college and, ultimately, better health care to people in eastern North Carolina, according to Dr. Tansey, who announced a schedule of Grand Opening events this week.

"The new Katie Paul Allied Health and Nursing Building will allow the college to build on its fine tradition of providing quality education to front-line health care professionals who serve throughout eastern North Carolina," Dr. Tansey said. "The building and its new equipment will expose our students to 21^st century medical practices that will lead to better health care for people throughout the BCCC service area."

"The college is grateful to the community leaders, health care educators and the taxpayers of Beaufort County who have all shared in our vision at BCCC of a health care workforce that is prepared to meet the challenges in today's health care," she said.

The Grand Opening will kick off with an Open House and Luncheon to give BCCC Allied Health alumni the chance to tour the new building and learn about the future of health-related education programs at the college.

The celebration will culminate with a ribbon-cutting held during a Business After Hours sponsored by the BCCC Foundation, The Washington/Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce and Vidant Beaufort Hospital.

The 30,600 square-foot building will, for the first time, house all of the college's health sciences programs including the Associate Degree and Practical Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technology and Certified Nurse Aide I and II programs.

Previously, the Allied Health Programs were housed in 17,199 square feet of space in three buildings.

"The new building will bring people in Allied Health programs on campus together," said Erica Schatz, chairman of BCCC's Allied Health Division. "That should not only benefit the students in these programs but also the faculty and staff."

With the opening of the new building, BCCC will gradually increase the number of nursing students. BCCC anticipates an expansion of 20 students in the Associate Degree Nursing program and 10 in the Practical Nursing program within the first three to five years, she said.

Like the building which previously housed the college's nursing programs, the new building will be named for Katie Paul, a pioneer of nurse education in Beaufort County who was the first director of nursing programs at BCCC.

The new building includes three nursing laboratories, one nurse aide laboratory, one medical science laboratory, a 100-seat lecture hall, five classrooms, one computer laboratory and some 20 faculty offices.

Construction costs of some $6.8 million were paid through grants and loans taken by the county and the college. BCCC recently received a grant of nearly $1 million from the Golden LEAF Foundation to update equipment used by Allied Health faculty and students.

See Christie Brinkley in Chicago with the BCCC Foundation!

Join the Beaufort County Community College Foundation, Saturday, Aug. 4, for a trip to Durham to see Christie Brinkley in the musical Chicago and tour Duke University’s world famous Lemur Center.

The trip will include lunch at Tyler’s Tap Room on the American Tobacco Campus in Durham and dinner at Tir Na Nog Irish pub in downtown Raleigh.

The cost of the trip, open to all BCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college, is $165 per person. The registration deadline is Monday, July 30.

The price of the trip includes transportation to and from Durham, two meals and tickets for seats in the orchestra section for Chicago at the Durham Performing Arts Center in downtown Durham.

The trip will leave the parking lot at BCCC by 7:30 a.m. and arrive at the Lemur Center on the Duke University campus about 10 a.m. Once there, the group will tour the center, the home of vital research for some 40 years about the lemur species. Visitors to the center will typically observe about 10 different species of lemurs and are encouraged to bring their cameras.

Following this tour, participants will travel to Tyler’s Tap Room at the historic American Tobacco Campus for lunch at noon. After lunch, the group will make its way across the street to DPAC for a matinee performance of Chicago, featuring the world-famous model and actress Christie Brinkley in the role of Roxie Hart in her highly-anticipated Broadway tour debut.

A tale of greed, murder, corruption and show biz, Chicago features hit songs such as All that Jazz, Cell Block Tango and Razzle Dazzle along with some of the most electrifying dancing seen on Broadway.

After the performance, participants will travel to Raleigh for dinner about 5:30 p.m. at Tir Na Nog in downtown Raleigh for Irish fare typical of the food that Roxie Hart and others in Chicago would have enjoyed.

The tour is scheduled to return to Beaufort County around 9:30 p.m.
