Lantco wins popular croquet tournament for second year

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation’s ninth annual Cutthroat Croquet Tournament drew an enthusiastic crowd to Bonner Point in Bath on May 19 when the event crowned a champion from New Bern for the second year in a row.

Also for the second year, the tournament featured two flights - a Cutthroat Flight for more serious players and a Rapscallion Flight for more casual players.

First prize in the Cutthroat Flight went to Donald Lantco of New Bern his second victory in the tournament. Other winners in the Cutthroat Flight were Tom Harrington, second place; Luther Davis, third place, and Roy Williams, fourth place.

First prize in the Rapscallion Flight went to Marshall Hall of Washington. Other winners in the Rapscallion Flight were Isaac Jennette, second place; Tom Gray, third place, and Tres Thompson, fourth place.

They were among 41 players who took to the field in the annual tournament, which raises money for the Dot and John Tankard Memorial Scholarship awarded by the BCCC Foundation and restoration projects at Historic Bath State Historic Site.

The “booty” for winning in each flight included hand crafted croquet sets and of course – the coveted pirate trophy. A hanging basket of flowers donated by George Chrismon - owner of Garden Classics in Bath – went to each of the second place winners and a WalMart gift certificate went to the third place winners. All winners were awarded a BCCC car organizer.

Past tournament winners include; Tony Price, winner in 2004; Howard Tanner, 2005 and 2007; Roy Williams, 2006; Judy Jennette, 2008; Jerry Waters, 2009; Sam Taylor, 2010, and Donald Lantco, 2011.

All the tournament players competed in a preliminary 6-wicket practice round as well as a 12-wicket flighting round by lunch time.

The players and more than 90 spectators enjoyed a lunch which included fried chicken donated by Old Town Country Kitchen in Bath and WalMart in Washington, deviled eggs, pimento cheese sandwiches, veggie bites, as well as beef and wick, blueberry scones, Yorkshire pudding, and mango punch. The English fare was prepared and donated by chef, Paul Cyr and his wife Ruth.

The tournament raised some $5,000

for college scholarships and Bath restoration projects. 

Petals and Produce of Washington and Pinetown, owned and operated by Tom and Heather VanStaalduinen, provided all of the flower baskets for the tables. Cars and Carts of Washington also assisted by providing golf carts with which to transport players and equipment to and from the parking lot.

Semi-final play in both flights resumed after lunch. The first place winners of each of these rounds went on to the final round.

Corporate sponsors of the event were Southern Bank and Trust Co., of Belhaven, Rod Cantrell, CFP, Edward Jones Investments of Washington, Tankard Farms, Dark Water Enterprises, Inc., and Crop Production Services of Vanceboro. First prize for the Rapscallion Flight was donated by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.

The event raised $5,000 in net proceeds for the BCCC Foundation and Historic Bath State Historic Site, according to Judy Jennette, director of the BCCC Foundation.

The scholarship generated by this tournament, memorializes John and Dorothy “Dot” Tankard.  Dot was dedicated to the preservation of Historic Bath and served as director of the Historic Bath State Historic Site for many years. John was a member of the BCCC Board of Trustees from its first meeting in February 1968 through June 1971.

“The BCCC Foundation especially wants to thank Marcia Norwood, BCCC public relations and foundation specialist, who oversaw the tournament in my absence and those BCCC Ambassadors who helped with the event,” Jennette said. “They are a joy to work with and really make the tournament run smoothly."

Several local croquet players congregate beside the Bonner House in Bath on the third Sunday of every month to hone their skills. The next Sunday to play will be June 19. Play begins at about 1:30 pm and the equipment is provided. Players are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and cold drinks. All skill levels are welcome. Campus Campaign Extended to June 14

It's not too late to make a contribution or a pledge to the Beaufort County Community College Foundation's Campus Campaign. The deadline to do so has been extended to June 14!

The Foundation awarded more than 100 scholarships in this fiscal year, and provided ten students with emergency grants. Funds for the staff and faculty members of the year were also awarded to Brown McFadden and Bill Smith respectively.

Our College continues to demonstrate its crucial function in times of economic distress, by maintaining high enrollments from one semester to another.  With continued high unemployment, our community is turning to the College for hope – and we are working harder than ever to deliver it.  Now, more than ever, we need a strong Foundation to help us through this challenging economy.

For the third year in a row, the Foundation is aligning its annual campus campaign with the new fiscal year. In doing so, donors who prefer payroll deductions may apportion their contribution over twelve months and thereby simplify the bookkeeping in the business office.

BCCC Foundation trip to see Wicked announced

The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is sponsoring a day trip Sunday, May 6, to see the award winning musical, “Wicked,” at the Durham Performing Arts Center and the Alexander Calder Exhibit, “Form, Balance, Joy,” at the Nasher Art Museum. The trip will include brunch at Vin Rouge, orchestra seating for the show, a tour of the Calder Exhibit, and round trip van transportation. The cost per person will be $180. Harris Awarded the Louise P. Kidwell Accounting Scholarship

Greenville resident, Jennifer Harris, has earned the 2012 Louise P. Kidwell Accounting Scholarship at BCCC. The scholarship is provided by Keith Kidwell, owner of the H & R Block franchise located at 1550 W 15^th Street in Washington and his sister Mary Lou Woolard, Real Estate agent for Coldwell Banker Coastal Rivers Realty at the same address.

Harris, now in her second year at BCCC, is a graduate of D.H. Conley High School and hopes to become a tax preparer after completing her studies at BCCC. While in school, Harris is also working as a manicurist for Co. B Salon.

“Thank you very much to the Kidwell family. As a working parent and full time student, this scholarship is a true blessing,” stated Harris when asked about receiving the scholarship.

Louise Kidwell was born in Aberdeen, Maryland. She lived and worked during a time that did not look favorably upon women in higher education or the workplace. Yet, while raising her family, she worked as an accountant for Van Riper Schmitt & Co. in NYC and later for H & R Block in Rutherford, N.J. After passing the IRS Enrolled Agent exam, she bought the local H & R Block franchise, established what would become LPK Accounting Service Inc., and relocated to Washington, NC.

The Louise P. Kidwell endowment was established by her children - Ronald M. Kidwell Jr., Mark E. Kidwell, Mary Lou Woolard, Keith D. Kidwell, and Proctor Kidwell, as well as several memorials from Mrs. Kidwell’s friends.

Several golf tourney winners have BCCC roots

Several winners in the BCCC Foundation's 18th annual Beaufort County Community College Foundation Golf Tournament have connections to Beaufort County Community College.

Among the winners were Ernie Glover, a winner in the Blue Flight and son of BCCC nursing instructor Sherry Glover; Red Flight winners Charlie Rasmussen, husband of BCCC Foundation Board member Radell Rasmussen, and Yeates Sprull, husband of Customized Training Coordinator Lauren Spruill; Purple Flight winner and BCCC President David McLawhorn and Gold Flight winner and BCCC Foundation Director Judy Jennette.

The tournament, held Friday, Oct. 21, at the Washington Yacht and Country Club, is the largest fundraising event held by the BCCC Foundation.

Potash Corp - Aurora, formerly PCS Phosphate, is the primary sponsor of the tournament. Art works sought for community college exhibit

The N.C. Community College System is seeking works of art created by current and former community college faculty and staff for the 2012 N.C. Community Colleges Art Exhibition.

All media suitable for use in a public office building are welcome, including, but not limited to paintings, drawings, graphic design, computer design and animation, photography, pottery, stained glass, weaving, woodcarving, metalwork and sculpture. The works of art will be displayed in public spaces on all six floors of the Caswell Building in Raleigh, home to the community college system office, and the spaces are well- suited to large-scale work.

Each college may select up to four piece of art for inclusion in the 2012 exhibit. To enter, artists must submit a signed exhibition art entry form and up to two digital photographs of each work. The deadline for entry submissions to be in Raleigh is Dec. 2.

Still time to signup for Rembrandt & Rockettes trip!

There’s still time to register for the Nov. 12 and 13 trip offered by the Beaufort County Community College Foundation to the Triangle to see an exhibit of works by Rembrandt at the North Carolina Museum of Art and a performance by the famous Radio City Music Hall’s Rockettes at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

The trip will also include a four-hour shopping excursion to the Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane as well as first class ac- commodations at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham.

The cost of the trip, open to all BCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college, is $361 per person, double oc- cupancy, and $435 per person, single occupancy. It is limited to 22 participants. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 28.

The price of the trip includes tours of two exhibits and lunch at the N.C. Museum of Art, a trip to Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane, one night at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham, breakfast and dinner Sunday and tickets to the Christmas Spectacular at DPAC as well as transportation, tips and taxes.

The trip will leave the parking lot at BCCC by 7:30 a.m. Nov. 12 and arrive at the art museum about 10 a.m. Once there, the group will be met by a docent and tour the museum’s collection of 17th Century Dutch and Flemish paintings. Following the tour, the group will have lunch in the museum’s Iris Restaurant.

After lunch, the group will tour the museum’s “Rembrandt in America” exhibit, the largest collection of Rembrandt paint- ings ever presented in an American exhibition and the first major exhibition to explore in depth the history of collecting Rembrandt paintings in America. The NCMA is the only East Coast venue for this exceptional show that features works of art from across the United States.

After leaving the Museum of Art, participants will be driven to the Washington Duke Inn on the campus of Duke Uni- versity an AAA Four Diamond Award-winning luxury hotel. At this point, luggage will be unloaded and participants may choose from a number of different activities: shopping at the new Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane, a visit to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, a stroll around the Duke University campus, or just relaxing in the room.

For those remaining on the bus, the new Tanger Outlet Mall in Mebane will be the next stop. The mall also features a food court where tour participants may dine-on-their-own. The bus will return the shoppers to the hotel by 9 p.m.

On Sunday morning participants can enjoy break- fast buffet until 10 a.m. in the hotel’s Vista Restaurant. After breakfast, the bus will provide a ride to Duke Chapel at 10:30 a.m. for those wishing to attend the 11 a.m. church service.

Between noon and 12:30 p.m., the bus will gather up all participants at the hotel and the chapel, and go to DPAC for a 1 p.m. performance of the “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” featuring the world-famous Radio City Rockettes.

After the show, the bus will take participants for din- ner to Maggiano’s Little Italy Restaurant at Durham’s South Square Mall for a family style meal. Dinner at Maggiano’s, the winner of the 2011 Open Table – Din- ers’ Choice, will feature two appetizers, two salads, four main course dishes, and two desserts.

By 5 p.m. the bus will reload and return to Beaufort County around 7 p.m.
